What Are ChatGPT Ranking Factors?
ChatGPT ranking factors are the signals that make ChatGPT more likely to name and recommend a brand: presence in its training data, retrievable pages that answer buyer questions directly, consistent brand descriptions across the web, and third-party comparisons and lists that already recommend the brand.
For the evidence behind each factor, and what matters less than you think, read our guide to ChatGPT ranking factors.
There is no official list — OpenAI does not publish one — so ranking factors are inferred by watching answers. What holds up under observation: brands that appear on the pages ChatGPT Search actually retrieves (comparisons, "best of" round-ups, well-structured docs) get named more often, and brands with a clear, consistent one-line description get quoted more accurately.
Position inside the answer follows the same logic. Appearance order tends to track how often and how prominently a brand shows up in the retrieved sources, which is why one strong third-party list can move you from unnamed to #2 for a whole prompt cluster.
The practical stance: treat every claimed factor as a hypothesis and measure. Run your buyer prompts on a schedule, read the answers and their citations, and let the evidence tell you which factors are doing the work for your category.
