Copilot's edge is placement. It sits in Bing results, the Edge sidebar, the Windows taskbar and Microsoft 365 — surfaces people use at work without ever choosing an 'AI product'. That gives it a quiet, enormous audience: office workers, IT managers and small-business owners typing practical, purchase-shaped questions on the machine their employer gave them. These are exactly the queries — 'best expense software for a small business', 'alternatives to X for teams' — where a Copilot shortlist starts or ends a vendor evaluation.

Copilot's answers are grounded in Bing's index, and it usually cites the pages behind them with links. In practice that means your Copilot visibility is tied to how Bing sees your corner of the web — which is not the same as Google's view, and rarely the version of your SEO picture you've been optimizing. Review roundups, vendor comparison pages and documentation that Bing favors will keep showing up in Copilot's answers. Tracking which sources it cites for your buyers' questions shows you what the Microsoft side of the internet believes about your category.

Who loses deals here? Brands selling anything bought at work: B2B SaaS, business services, hardware, finance tools. The buyer asking Copilot doesn't tweet about it and won't appear in your analytics — they read the answer inside a sidebar and shortlist from it. Multiply that by every Windows machine in every office and 'we don't need to think about Bing' becomes an expensive default.
