Meta AI doesn't wait for people to visit a chatbot — it lives inside WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and Messenger, one tap from conversations people are already having. The questions it gets are correspondingly casual and commercial: what to buy, where to eat, which brand is good, often asked mid-chat while making a plan with friends. For consumer and DTC brands, this is the most intimate recommendation surface an AI has ever had. And it's completely invisible from the outside — a recommendation in a private thread leaves no trace in any analytics tool you own.

Meta AI's answers can draw on web search as well as Meta's own models, and when it searches it can point to sources — though in a chat window, few people tap through. What sticks is the name it says first. Its picture of your brand blends what the model learned in training with whatever retrieval surfaces in the moment, which means it can lag your repositioning, miss your new product line, or echo an old controversy. The only way to know which version of you it's repeating is to ask it the way buyers do — repeatedly, and on the record.

The audience is the broadest of any assistant — billions of people across Meta's apps, most of whom will never open ChatGPT. If you sell anything consumers ask friends about — skincare, shoes, food, travel, apps — Meta AI is now part of that word-of-mouth loop. Brands with a strong Instagram presence sometimes assume that transfers to Meta AI's answers; it may not, and assuming is not a strategy. A tracked weekly baseline tells you where you actually stand in the engine embedded where your customers already talk, and whether the trend is moving with your marketing or ignoring it.
