How to Rank on ChatGPT: A Practical Guide for Small Brands
How to rank on ChatGPT without an enterprise budget: a seven-step plan covering prompts, crawlability, mentions, and tracking.

More buyers now start product research by asking an assistant instead of typing into a search box. If you want to rank on ChatGPT — meaning: show up when someone asks it to recommend tools, services, or brands in your category — the work is concrete and mostly free. This guide covers how to rank on ChatGPT as a small brand, in the order that actually moves results, with honest notes about what you cannot control.
Definition: Ranking on ChatGPT means your brand consistently appears in ChatGPT's answers to buying-intent prompts in your category — ideally near the top of the recommended list, described accurately, with your site cited as a source. Because answers vary between runs, "ranking" is best measured as a mention rate across repeated prompts, not a fixed position.
One caveat up front: nobody can guarantee placement. OpenAI does not sell it, and the output is probabilistic. What follows shifts probabilities — in our experience, meaningfully — over weeks, not days.
Step 1: Pick the prompts you want to rank for
You cannot rank "in general." You rank for specific questions. Write down 10 to 20 prompts your actual buyers would type:
- "best invoicing tool for freelancers"
- "alternatives to QuickBooks for a one-person business"
- "cheapest way to send professional invoices"
Prompts are the new keywords, with one difference: they are longer, more conversational, and often include the buyer's situation ("for a solo founder," "on a budget"). Pull them from sales calls, support tickets, and the questions people ask in your community. Skip prompts containing your brand name — those measure recall, not discovery.
Step 2: Establish a baseline before changing anything
Run each prompt in a fresh ChatGPT session with memory off. Record three things: did you appear, at what position, and which sites were cited. Do this three times per prompt on different days, because single runs are noisy.
This baseline is the difference between "we did stuff and vibes improved" and knowing what worked. If you want it done for you, our free AI visibility checker runs this baseline across all 8 engines, ChatGPT included. Report emailed within 24 hours (beta).
Step 3: Make sure ChatGPT can read your site
Unglamorous, frequently broken, checked in ten minutes:
- robots.txt. OpenAI uses different bots for different jobs — GPTBot for training, OAI-SearchBot for its live search index, ChatGPT-User for on-demand page visits. The official bot documentation lists the user agents. Many sites blocked "all AI bots" in 2023 and forgot; blocking OAI-SearchBot removes you from search-mode answers entirely.
- Server-rendered content. If your key pages are empty divs until JavaScript runs, assume crawlers see the empty version. Marketing pages, docs, and comparison pages should render as plain HTML.
- Plain-language pages. Your homepage should state what you are, who you serve, and what category you belong to in the first screen of text. Assistants quote pages that answer plainly.
Step 4: Get onto the pages ChatGPT already reads
This is the highest-leverage step, and it happens off your site. When ChatGPT answers "best X" prompts with search enabled, it retrieves and summarizes a shortlist of existing pages — listicles, comparison posts, forum threads. Your baseline from Step 2 told you which sources get cited for your prompts. Work that list:
- Listicles and roundups. Email the authors of the cited "best X" posts. Be specific about what makes your product different, offer a free account, and make their update trivial (a short blurb, a screenshot). Many are actively maintained because their owners want the same AI citations you do.
- Reddit and community threads. Answer engines lean heavily on community discussion for "honest opinion" prompts. Do not astroturf — it gets called out, and the calling-out also gets indexed. Participate genuinely where your users already are, and make a product good enough that strangers name it unprompted. Slow, but it compounds.
- Review platforms and directories. G2, Capterra, Product Hunt, and niche directories are consistently retrieved for software prompts. A complete profile with a handful of real reviews beats absence.
The pattern behind all three: ChatGPT recommends what the readable web repeatedly associates with your category. We broke down the underlying signals in ChatGPT ranking factors.
Step 5: Publish the comparison content yourself
If no good page exists for "your product versus the incumbent," write it — honestly, including who should pick the incumbent. Honest comparison pages get retrieved because they match exactly what buyers ask, and few competitors bother to be candid. In our testing, the pages most often cited for tool-choice prompts are comparisons, pricing breakdowns, and "who is this for" explainers — not feature announcements.
Structure them for retrieval: a one-paragraph verdict at the top, a comparison table, clear headings per use case, a visible last-updated date.
Step 6: Keep your brand entity consistent everywhere
ChatGPT assembles its picture of you from many sources. Make them agree. One name (not three spellings), one category phrase used verbatim across your homepage, About page, directory listings, and social bios, one consistent one-line description. Inconsistency does not get you penalized — it gets you diluted, which in a probabilistic system means appearing less often.
Step 7: Track it, because answers drift
Model updates, index refreshes, and competitor moves change answers without warning. A brand that ranked second in June can be absent in August having done nothing wrong. Re-run your prompt set weekly, watch mention rate rather than single positions, and re-check after every major model release. A ChatGPT rank tracker automates exactly this loop — scheduled prompts, position history, cited-source tracking — and prompt monitoring alerts you when an answer flips. The measurement methodology gets its own post: how to track ChatGPT rankings over time.
What a realistic timeline looks like
- Week 1: prompts chosen, baseline recorded, robots.txt and rendering fixed.
- Weeks 2 to 6: outreach to cited listicles, review profiles completed, first comparison pages published.
- Weeks 6 to 12: search-mode answers start reflecting the new pages; mention rate on tracked prompts moves.
- Beyond: training-data effects (the model "knowing" you without searching) lag by months and depend on accumulated mentions.
Anyone promising day-three results is measuring noise. The compounding is real, but it is a quarter-scale game.
Check where you stand
Every step above starts from knowing your baseline. Run the free AI visibility checker — give us your domain and email, and you get a report showing where you rank on ChatGPT and the rest of all 8 engines, which prompts you appear for, and who is being recommended in your place. Report emailed within 24 hours (beta). Real answers, not a black-box score.
