How to Track Brand Mentions in AI Search: 3 Ways That Work
How to track brand mentions in AI search: a free prompt protocol, a copyable log template, what to check in a tool, and free Google and Bing AI data.

You can track brand mentions in AI search, but not the way you track them on social media. There is no feed of AI answers to crawl, so you sample them instead: the same prompts, run the same way, logged the same way. This guide shows how to track brand mentions in AI search across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, and the other engines, with a log template, three ways to run it, and a method for competitors and trends.
Definition: Tracking brand mentions in AI search means running a fixed set of buyer prompts through AI engines on a schedule and logging, for every answer, whether it names your brand, cites your site without naming you, or leaves you out. You also log where you appear, how you are described, which sources are cited, and which competitors are named. Answers vary between runs, so it is sampling, not crawling.
Is it possible to track brand mentions in AI search?
Yes, by prompt sampling. Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, and GA4 each show a free slice, covering links and visits (see below), but none shows an unlinked mention, the prompt behind the answer, how you were described, or which competitors were named next to you.
Why AI mentions are harder to track than social mentions
Social listening works because posts are public and they stay put. AI answers are neither.
There is no feed. Each answer is generated on demand inside a private session, so nothing can be indexed. You have to ask the questions yourself.
Answers are non-deterministic. In a SparkToro study of 2,961 responses from ChatGPT, Claude, and Google's AI, there was less than a 1 in 100 chance that ChatGPT or Google's AI returned the same list of brands in any two of 100 responses to the same prompt. The same list in the same order was closer to 1 in 1,000. Claude repeated its lists only slightly more often. One answer is an anecdote. A rate across many runs is a measurement.
Some answers come from search, some from model knowledge. Per OpenAI's ChatGPT search documentation, ChatGPT "may search the web automatically when your question would benefit from current information." In the newer Claude experience, Claude also searches the web when it judges it helpful. Search answers usually carry citations; answers from training data often have none. Log which one you got.
Personalization leaks in. With memory on, ChatGPT may use saved memories when it rewrites a search query, and it estimates your location from your IP address. Perplexity's memory feature can store preferences such as favorite brands. If you have asked an assistant about your own product, your casual checks can be skewed.
What to record on every run
A mention (your brand named in the text) is not a citation (your page linked as a source). They often come apart, so every answer gets one of three states:
- Named: the answer names your brand, with or without a link.
- Cited only: your page is a source, but the answer does not name you.
- Absent: neither.
Log one row per prompt, per engine, per run. Freeze the prompt wording and never overwrite old rows. The history is the point.
| Column | What to record |
|---|---|
| Date | Day of the run |
| Engine or surface | ChatGPT, Gemini, AI Overviews, and so on |
| Search used | Yes if it searched or shows sources, no if it answered from model knowledge |
| Session | Logged out, temporary, or incognito, plus your location |
| Prompt | The exact wording, pasted, never retyped |
| AI Overview shown | Yes or No (Google only). If No, leave State blank, so a missing Overview never counts as Absent |
| State | Named, Cited only, or Absent |
| Position | Appearance order among brands named, 1 = first. Blank unless Named |
| Description | The phrase used to describe you, verbatim |
| Cited sources | Every URL or domain linked |
| Competitors named | Every other brand, in order |
| Notes | Refusals, errors, wrong facts about you |
How to track brand mentions in AI search: 3 ways compared
The best ways to track brand mentions in AI search come down to three, and most brands move through them in this order.
| Method | Cost | Engines | Shows trends | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manual prompt protocol | Free, but hours per round | Whichever you run | Only if you keep at it | Learning which prompts matter |
| Free checker snapshot | Free, one check per domain | All 8 engines | No | A baseline without the chore |
| Scheduled tracker | Paid, monthly | Depends on the tool | Yes | Ongoing tracking of prompts that matter |
Way 1: Run a manual prompt protocol
Write 15 to 25 prompts across four types, keeping your brand name out of the first three:
- Category: "best CRM for solo consultants"
- Problem: "how do I stop losing leads from my contact form"
- Comparison: "alternatives to [competitor]"
- Brand check: "what is [your brand]" to see how engines describe you
Run each prompt three times per engine, on the same weekday every week (every two weeks if hours are tight), in a clean session. Settings as of September 2026:
| Engine or surface | Clean session | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Temporary chat set to Unpersonalized, or logged out | Whether it searched; the Sources panel |
| Gemini | Memory off, under Settings & help, then Personal Intelligence | The Sources button, when present |
| Google AI Overviews | Private, signed-out window | Whether an AI Overview appeared; its linked sources |
| Perplexity | Incognito, which turns off memory and history | The numbered citations |
| Microsoft Copilot | Signed out, or a new conversation with personalization and memory turned off in settings | The cited sources |
| Claude | Incognito chat (the ghost icon on a new chat), which does not use your memory | Whether web search ran |
| Grok, DeepSeek, Meta AI | Grok's Private Chat; for the others, signed out or a fresh chat with memory off where the app has it | Whether any sources are shown |
Keep your location constant. A VPN can change the location ChatGPT infers.
The honest cost, as arithmetic rather than data: 20 prompts × just 4 of the engines × 3 runs = 240 answers per round. At an assumed minute each to run and log, that is four hours every week. Skip a few weeks and your trend has holes. For the ChatGPT-specific routine, see how to monitor brand mentions in ChatGPT.
Way 2: Take a free checker snapshot
For a baseline across all 8 engines without 240 chats, use the free AI visibility checker: a one-time, no-signup snapshot, one check per domain, with the real prompts and answers behind every finding. While SeenMeter is in beta, checks run concierge-style: we run your brand through all 8 engines and email the full report within 24 hours.
A snapshot tells you where you stand today, not whether you are gaining or losing ground.
Way 3: Tools to track brand mentions in ChatGPT and Gemini
Switch to a scheduled tracker when a round takes longer than you can repeat every week, or when you start missing weeks. Software to track brand mentions in AI responses comes in three kinds: standalone AI visibility trackers, SEO suites with AI add-ons, and DIY scripts against model APIs. Scripts are cheap, but API output may not match what people see in the apps.
For ChatGPT, the tool should log whether each answer used search, since search answers usually carry citations and model-knowledge answers often don't, so the two need separate rates. For Gemini, ask which of Google's three surfaces it runs: the Gemini app, AI Overviews, and AI Mode. Google says AI Mode and AI Overviews may use different models and techniques, so one does not stand in for another.
Whichever you pick, check six things:
- Engine coverage, spelled out. Which engines, and which Google surfaces, by name.
- Answer text, not just a score. You should see what was asked and what came back.
- Run frequency. Daily runs catch a model update the week it lands.
- Per-run states, position, cited sources, and competitors, so you can compute your own rates.
- Export, so the history stays yours.
- History retention. How many days of answers are kept? Trends need months.
For reference, the SeenMeter LLM rank tracker re-runs every tracked prompt daily on all 8 engines, with AI Overviews covered as part of Gemini. It does not track AI Mode. Plans are flat: Basic $49, Growth $149, Advanced $399, and Max $999 per month, for 30, 50, 100, or 500 tracked prompts, with CSV export on Growth and up. Answer history is kept 30 days on Basic and Growth, 90 on Advanced, and 365 on Max, so on Growth, export monthly if you want a longer trend. Paid plans are open as a waitlist until billing goes live.
Pair sampling with free first-party data
The best ways to monitor brand mentions in AI search use both: sampling tells you whether engines name you and who they name instead, and first-party data tells you whether answers link to you and send visits.
Google Search Console. The Generative AI performance report counts how many times links to your site were shown in a generative AI feature on Google Search, AI Overviews and AI Mode together. You can slice it by page, country, device, and date. There is no query dimension, no unlinked mentions, and no competitors. It has been available to every site since August 31, 2026, but only once your pages earn enough AI feature impressions, and not if you opted out of Search generative AI features.
Bing Webmaster Tools. AI Performance, in public preview since February 2026, reports total citations, average cited pages, a sample of grounding queries (the search phrases the AI used, not the user's prompt), and page-level citations across Microsoft Copilot, Bing's AI summaries, and select partners. It does not show where in an answer you appeared.
Google Analytics 4. Since May 2026, GA4 sorts visits from recognized AI assistants into a built-in AI Assistant channel. Google has not published that list or named Perplexity in it, and visits with no referrer or UTM tag still land in Direct. For a channel group and a tested regex that covers the rest, see AI search analytics.
How to track competitor mentions in AI Overviews and summaries
Your competitors column does the work, in three steps.
- Log every brand, in order, on every run. Share of voice is your mentions divided by mentions of all the brands you track. It moves with that list, so fix the list first.
- Build a gap list. Filter for rows where a competitor is Named and you are Absent. The sources cited in those answers are your first outreach and content targets.
- Treat AI Overviews as its own surface. Many searches show no AI Overview at all: in a Pew Research Center analysis of March 2025 data, 8% of one- or two-word searches showed an AI summary, against 60% of searches that began with a question word. So test the question-style queries buyers type, and log No in the AI Overview shown column when none appears. When one appears, log every brand named and every source linked. AI Mode is a separate surface that can answer differently, as noted above; if you check it by hand, give it its own surface label.
The SeenMeter AI Overview tracker records Named, Cited only, or Absent, your rank, the sources cited, and the competitors named for each tracked prompt, and competitor tracking turns that competitors column into share of voice over time. For what Google says makes a page eligible to be linked in the first place, see how to show up in AI Overviews.
Historical trend analysis for AI brand mentions
- Pick one headline metric: mention rate per prompt per engine, meaning Named runs divided by total runs. Track the Cited only rate beside it, not inside it.
- Smooth before you react. Use a rolling four-week average. A one-week swing is often sampling noise.
- Read position as an average. In the SparkToro study, the same brand order came up about once in 1,000 runs, so one "second place" means little.
- Annotate events. Mark model releases, your launches and outreach, and competitor moves, or you cannot explain a change.
- Watch engines diverge. If one engine drops while the others hold, check the sources that engine now cites.

FAQ
Is it possible to track brand mentions in AI answers?
Yes, by sampling, and the number of runs decides how far you can trust a rate. As plain arithmetic: with 3 runs of one prompt on one engine, a single odd answer moves the rate by 33 points. Pool three weekly runs over four weeks and you have 12 runs, where one odd answer moves it by about 8 points. Trust pooled rates over single rounds.
Can I track AI mentions for free?
Yes. The manual protocol costs only time, and a free checker gives you a one-time baseline across engines. Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, and GA4 add free data on links and visits.
How often should I track brand mentions in AI search?
Weekly, on the same weekday, with each prompt run three times per engine. Every two weeks works if hours are tight, as long as the schedule stays fixed. Judge changes on a rolling four-week average rather than one round.
