How to Check Brand Visibility in ChatGPT
How to check brand visibility in ChatGPT three ways: a manual test, a free one-time check, or daily rank tracking. What each shows and where to start.

Before you spend a single hour optimizing for AI search, you need one number: does ChatGPT recommend you right now, and how often? Checking your brand visibility in ChatGPT answers that question. There are three legitimate ways to do it: by hand, with a free checker tool, or with a full rank tracker. Each has a place. This post explains how to do each properly, what each will and will not tell you, and the mistakes that make results meaningless.
Definition: Checking brand visibility in ChatGPT means testing whether, and in what position, ChatGPT mentions a given brand when answering buying-intent prompts in the brand's category. Because ChatGPT's answers vary between runs and sessions, a valid check always covers multiple prompts and multiple runs. A single screenshot is an anecdote, not a measurement.
Why you cannot trust a single ChatGPT answer
Three properties of ChatGPT break naive checking:
- Non-determinism. The same prompt produces different lists on different runs. You can rank second at 9am and be Absent at noon with nothing having changed.
- Memory and personalization. If you have ever discussed your own product with ChatGPT while signed in, its memory may inflate your apparent ranking. You are the single worst-placed person to casually check your own brand.
- Search mode variance. Whether the model decides to search the web changes where the answer comes from. Answers drawn from training data and answers built from live search results can disagree about you. When ChatGPT does search, its answers can cite and link their sources, per OpenAI's publisher FAQ, so the pages it cites become part of what you check.
Every method below exists to work around these three problems.
Way 1: Run a manual check in ChatGPT
Free, immediate, and fine for a first look, if you follow the protocol:
- Use a clean context. Log out, or start a Temporary Chat and choose Unpersonalized, so it neither uses your memories nor creates new ones. This is non-negotiable; personalized answers are flattery, not data. OpenAI explains the options in its Memory documentation.
- Write 10 to 20 discovery prompts for a first look (20 to 50 once you track them). Phrase them the way buyers do: "best X for Y," "alternatives to Z," "what should a solo founder use for X." Do not include your brand name.
- Run each prompt three times on different days. Record: Named (in the answer text), Cited only (your page linked, your brand not named), or Absent; your appearance order in the answer; how you were described; and which sources were cited if search ran.
- Compute a mention rate: the share of runs where you are Named. Watch that number rather than fixating on position.
Budget two to three hours for a real pass. The output is a spreadsheet you will genuinely learn from: which prompts you own, which you lose, and who wins them.
Limits: manual checking does not scale past one engine and one moment. It tells you where you stand today on ChatGPT; it cannot tell you whether you are trending up, and repeating it monthly by hand is the kind of chore that quietly stops happening.
Way 2: Use a free checker tool
Free checkers automate the protocol above: they generate category prompts, run them against the engine cleanly, and report mentions and positions. Good ones show you actual answer text rather than a bare score. You should be able to see exactly what was asked and what came back.
Ours is the free AI visibility checker: you submit your domain and email, and we send one snapshot report per domain. While SeenMeter is in beta, checks run concierge-style: we run your brand through all 8 engines and email the full report within 24 hours. That covers ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini (with Google AI Overviews), Microsoft Copilot, Grok, Claude, DeepSeek, and Meta AI. No signup, no credit card, and the report quotes the real answers behind every finding. If ChatGPT is the engine you care about most, our free ChatGPT ranking checker page covers what the check looks at in ChatGPT specifically.
Whatever checker you use, apply two quality tests. First, does it disclose its prompts? A score derived from hidden prompts is unfalsifiable. Second, does it check more than ChatGPT? Buyers spread across engines, and a brand that ranks well on one engine can be Absent on another, so a single-engine check can badly skew your AI search visibility metrics.
Limits: a free check is a snapshot. It is the right tool for establishing a baseline and diagnosing gaps; it is not a monitoring system.
Way 3: Use a full rank tracker
If AI answers send you customers, or send them to competitors, a snapshot stops being enough. A rank tracker runs your prompt set on a schedule, across engines, and turns runs into trends: mention rate over time, average position, share of voice against named competitors, and which sources engines cite when they answer. That last part matters most for acting on the data, because cited pages are your outreach targets.
This is the category our ChatGPT rank tracker is built for, alongside the multi-engine LLM rank tracker view. Once the app is live, the practical difference from checking is timing: you find out that a model update dropped you from a money prompt this week, instead of discovering it in next quarter's pipeline numbers.
Limits: trackers cost money and are only worth it once you have prompts worth watching. Start with the free one-time check. Reserve a plan when the stakes justify it: paid tracking is waitlist-only until the app launches, and every plan re-runs your tracked prompts daily on all 8 engines.
Which way should you pick
| Method | Cost | Time | Engines covered | Shows trends | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manual check | Free | 2 to 3 hours per pass | One at a time | Only if you repeat it by hand | A rough first look: 10 prompts, three runs each |
| Free checker | Free, one check per domain | Minutes to submit. Report emailed within 24 hours (beta). | All 8 engines | No, one snapshot | A real baseline without the chore |
| Rank tracker | From $49 a month, waitlist until launch | Set up once, then daily runs | All 8 engines | Yes, daily | Brands whose revenue depends on AI answers |
Most brands should do them in that order. The manual pass teaches you which prompts matter; the free check validates it across engines; tracking makes it durable.
What to look for when you check brand visibility in ChatGPT
However you run it, insist on five outputs: the prompts used, your mention rate, your typical position when Named, how ChatGPT describes you (accuracy matters, because engines can keep repeating stale positioning long after you change it), and who gets recommended when you are Absent. A tool that returns only a grade out of 100 has told you that something is wrong without telling you what. Real answers, not a black-box score.
The only way to see where you stand is to read the answers themselves, across enough runs to trust the rate. Once you have a baseline, keeping watch is a different job, covered in our guide to monitoring brand mentions in ChatGPT.
FAQ
Is there a free way to check brand visibility in ChatGPT?
Yes. The manual protocol above costs nothing but time, and some tools offer a free check, ours included. Whichever you use, confirm that it shows its prompts and the full answer text, and that it covers more engines than ChatGPT.
How do I check if ChatGPT recommends my brand?
Write 10 to 20 prompts the way buyers ask, without your brand name. Run each three times on different days in a logged-out or unpersonalized temporary chat, and record whether you are Named, Cited only, or Absent. The share of runs where you are Named is your mention rate.
Why does ChatGPT give different answers to the same prompt?
The model generates each answer fresh, so the wording and the brands it lists can change between runs. Whether it searches the web, and what it finds when it does, also varies. Signed-in answers can be shaped by memory and custom instructions too. That is why a check needs repeated runs, not one screenshot.
How often should I repeat the check?
Take a baseline once, then repeat on a fixed schedule with the same prompts. Monthly is realistic by hand. If AI answers affect revenue, check weekly or more often, because a model update can change answers without warning. That is the job a tracker does.
Check where you stand
The fastest way to get a first read across engines is the free AI visibility checker. Submit your domain and email and you get a one-time snapshot across all 8 engines: every prompt shown, every answer quoted, Named / Cited only / Absent per engine, the sources each engine cites, and who gets named instead of you.
