What Are AI Citations?
AI citations are the sources an AI assistant lists alongside its answer — the pages it retrieved and leaned on while writing. For a brand, citations reveal which domains feed the answers in its category, and whether any of its own pages are among them.
To see which URLs each engine cites for your own prompts, see SeenMeter’s citation tracking.
Citations matter twice. First, they carry the click: when a reader wants to verify an answer, the cited page gets the visit — whether or not that page belongs to the brand being discussed. Second, they expose the supply chain of an answer: the review site, listicle, or docs page the engine trusted enough to build on.
That makes citation tracking unusually actionable. If the same competitor comparison post keeps getting cited across your prompts, you have a named, specific target to out-publish — not a vague instruction to "create more content". Track which URLs each engine cites over time, watch your own citation share, and you know exactly where the answers come from.
